As with any of the three gold denominations from the Carson City Mint, the first-year issue 1870-CC is the most desirable date in the HALF EAGLE series. Other dates, such as the 1872-CC, the 1873-CC, the 1876-CC, and the 1878-CC can be equally as challenging.
Of the 19 dates in the series, the 1891-CC is far and away the most plentifully available. This is a welcome treat to collectors who wish to build 10-piece “CC” type sets.
Of the nearly 710,000 “CC” half eagles minted, it is estimated that only 1.25% of that total have survived. This translates into approximately 9,000 pieces over 19 dates, with possibly half this total encompassed by the 1891-CC.
