Homestake Mine, South Dakota was created by LITAS
The greatest strike in history was the Comstock Lode in Nevada with $400 million in silver and gold produced between 1858 and 1880. I was surprized to read that the Homestake Gold Mine in South Dakota was the largest gold and silver mine in North America. Between 1876 and 2002 it produced $1 billion in gold alone. Total production was 39.8 million ounces of gold and 9 million ounces of silver. It was a low grade production (1 ounce of gold/ton) and there was no mint in South Dakota.

The Witwatersrand gold fields in east Africa have generated over 750 million ounces of high grade gold since a guy by the name of Harrison discovered the field. He sold his claim for $10 British pounds and left the area to look for a REALLY big strike.
