1871-CC Seated Quarter CC Coin of the Week 6-13-10 was created by Sierrabiker
1871-CC QUAR. DOL. CC Coin of the Week 6-13-2010
1871 was the second year of production at the Carson City Mint under the Direction of Henry F. Rice, Superintendent. It also saw the introduction of the Liberty Seated Dime, which brought the Denominations up to 7.
What’s amassing is that with 7 Denominations, it still amounted to the Second lowest Production Year, with a Grand total of 214,958 Coins produced!
Superintendent H.F. Rice, who was appointed by President U. S. Grant in late 1870, received new Dies from Philadelphia to coin the 1871-CC QUAR. DOL. to a miniscule Mintage total of: 10,890 Coins.
1871-CC Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar Varity 4
Motto above the Eagle 1866-1873
Specifics:
Diameter: 24.3 mm
Weight: 6.22 gram
Edge: Reeded
Composition: .900 Silver, .100 Copper
Approx. Survival in all Grades: 35-45
Estimated Uncirculated: 5
The 1870-CC, 1871-CC, 1872-CC and both Varieties of 1873-CC are all struck from the same Die as evidenced by microscopic examination of the details including placement of the Mintmark.
No CC-Quarter Dollars were minted in 1874. The next 1875-CC Quar. Dol. were from a Different Reverse Die and has the Mintmark in an entirely different Position.
With 1873-CC QUAR. DOL. Without Arrows being the Rarest, the 1870-CC QUAR. DOL. Second, the 1871-CC QUAR. DOL. is the third rarest date of the Quarter CC-Dollar Series!
The Coin pictured was part of the Auction by Bowers and Merena:
Norweb Collection Part 2, March 25-1988
Description: Sharply struck, with satin like fields, Brilliant, overlaid with delicate golden toning.
As you can see on the Photo of my Coin: It has an attractive golden Toning under which an almost Proof-like Surface suggests that the planchet may have been given special attention either to the fact that they weren’t to busy producing Quantities or it was designed to be an Specimen for a Gift to some Political or Business Associate of the Mint.
I’m glad, after all the smoke cleared, to be the happy Owner of such an esteemed piece.
Enjoy, O.K.

Wow Sierra Biker...what a coin!! This coin of yours is such a rare and hard to locate piece in any grade...but in MS-64!!! Your example certainly has to be among the very finest known.
I hope you'll bring it to our "show and tell" session this coming August in Carson City.
