1871-CC Liberty Seated $1 Coin of the Week 6-27-10

Accourding to the Jim Osborn's "Silver Dollar Encyclopedia", 1871-CC $1 coin is essentially unknown with a fully-struck head and good claw detail. Virtrually all coins were soft struck.

The 1871-CC $1 has been counterfeited in the past by adding the CC mintmark to the more common 1871 coin. Who knows what the Chinese will do with this date?

John,

Agreed...while my coin does not have impressive relief, it does show most details beter than you might expect. Thanks for your comments John.

Belay Off,

I was just adding information to the Randy's posting and did not have any idea that you were going to do part two on the same coin. This was not a comment on your particular coin.

In fact I agree with you about the "new and improved" grading. Grading has evolved over the years, from the time when "new" and "used" were the only grading classifications to the system of numerals from 1 to 70. Now it will be from 1 to 700.

Most of the grading is done by analyzing the Obverse of the coin. A few years ago "Official ANA Grading Standards" gave values to both the
obverse and reverse of the coin. Once "+" or CAC designations become old news, the next step would be to go back to grading both sides of the coin. How about "O+" and "R+".

By the way, the article (part I and II) was very well written.

Thanks, John for your comments. The parts one and two on this particular CC issue was an experiment Belay and I thought we would try. I hope people will give notice and read his part two on this coin, as it is very interesting and informative, composed in the standard Belay Off high calibre quality. To all, check it out.
Thanks again,
