Hi Randysc and Garryn
Four years ago I wrote an article in the Curry's Chronicle Summer 2007 issue entitled "Assembling a Carson City Mint Type Set"
You can see/read the entire article right here on this blog site. Just go to the "Curry's Chronicle" section on the left under "News and Articles", scroll down to view all the different issues and choose "Summer 2007'. My article is highlighted in red and by clicking it you will be able to open it and read the whole thing. In that article I provided a picture of the set, the same one as you see here in this reply post, but in black and white.
These great holders are extremely reasonably priced and offer a collector of very modest means the chance to join in and collect "CC" coins without "breaking the bank".
You cannot imagine how many friends and relatives have commented on this set proudly displayed in my living room. Many have asked..."What are these?"..."are they real?"..."Gee, I never knew Carson City had a mint!".....I ask, "Where were you born?...they answer..."Oh, right here in Las Vegas Nevada!".....I reply..."and you never knew that your home state had a mint!".....They'd reply..."Nope, I sure didn't"
Here's how my set is displayed in our living room. (Cute decorations courtesy of the drummer's wife!) Also; notice my framed C4OA certifcate along with the type set. Just about every visitor to our home (trusted ones of course!) have noticed this attractive display, made nice comments and asked many questions (like the fun examples I gave above.)
I also have "The Mint on Carson Street" - "James Crawford..." and a few other great books out on my living room table (just about 3 feet or so from this display) so as to provide an interesting yet casual way of introducing my friends to the wonderful world of "CC" coins and related history.
I'm not a salesman or anything...I'm not making any commissions here and I wasn't hired to say or do anything one way or another, but I really think that every C4OA member should get one of these holders and build a nice affordable set like this.
Here's a picture I'd like to include: This man (name unknown) read my article in Curry's and was thus inspired to build his own set. He bought his Capital Plastics holder from Southgate Coins then began to build his set. This coin purchase (shown here) marked the final coin needed to complete his set (either a "CC" seated half dollar or quarter dollar I believe). His coin purchase was made from the Southgate Coins booth at the Carson Mint (NV State Museum) show and this gentleman was kind enough to allow me to take his photo. I'm totally jazzed that someone I had never previously met was inspired enough to go and build one of his own sets due to an article I wrote! He sure looks happy, doesn't he?
No, it's not the rarest or most expensive "CC" item I own, but this type set provides great satisfaction and more "bang-for-the-buck" enjoyment than anything else in my collection. It certainly garnishes far more attention than even the rarest of my "CC" collectibles.
I hope you enjoy seeing this display as much as I love showing it off, and Randy, I hope you do get one of these and start your own set...you'll love it!

Hi Belay
Now that's a great coin! This is certainly a great COW post of one of the most special and important coins in the entire "CC" coin series.
Thanks for providing the image!

Great article Garryn, I like you did not know much about Trade Dollars until I wrote a COTW article regarding one. They are a fascinating part of the numismatic history of this country and of the Carson City Mint. I look forward to the articles that Mr. Sneddon submits to Curry's Chronicles regarding these gems. Boy if he only had a computer! Drummer it was your article that started me on my type set collection of "CC" coins and though I am far from completion filling that holder will be a dream come true. Your post in color just blows me away. Belay, The Rians Bequeath Collection is fantastic from the coins shown in your posts.
Again Garryn great job, you have raised the bar on the COTW posts!

I just would like to say how much I have learned from each and every one of you regarding the coins from our favorite mint. Thanks to all.

Michael,
This gentleman with the wide grin is C4OA member Willie Terrazas from Texas:
Willie has been a big supporter of the C4OA since 2006. He even recruited his local coin club, the International Coin Club of El Paso, to sign up as a member.
