The extreme doubling of Liberty on the 1876-CC 20c coin was not created at the Carson City mint. The working dies, manufactured in Phili. had been created with that flaw...thus a master die used to produce the working dies is most likley where the doubling originated.
The subject of mint errors is complicated and fascinating and a worthwhile study for anyone interested in the many varieties of U.S. coins which include such errors.

Thanks for that info Belay ! Slipped my mind regarding the Mother Mint creating the hubs and dies for coinage at that time. It still is very interesting why it happened. Maybe the reason for the shoddy work was the mint in Philly did not care about the mint in Carson. A very worthwhile study indeed.
