G,

I've done quite a bit of metal detecting and can tell you that many times silver coins will come out of the ground after many years looking just like they went in. Frequently, a kind of electrolosis occurs in the soil immediately next to the coin's surfaces which, in turn, forms a protective shield of sorts. I have never found a gold coin but can vouch for 100 year old silver coins coming out of the ground shiny as ever!

There was some evidence of mason jar lids in the ground. At some locations, someone put the coins in the ground and retrieved them later.

Sorry we are getting off track from your gold eagle Belay Off ! Still a great coin. :)

Roger....It's my pleasure, I assure you.

We would all love to read an article from an old pro like you!. Why don't you pick a couple of coins and I'll give you posting dates for each. We are completely reserved through mid April already so the first open posting date is Sunday, April 25th.

What do you say??
