Michael,

I bet you put that Kentucky Derby reference in just for Rusty's benefit. The record for Derby was set by Secretariat in 1973 at 1:59 2/5 and stands to this day although a horse (Monarchos--never heard of him) did run 1:59 4/5 in 2001. That's quite a bit faster than 2:37 3/4.

Rusty is it better horses, jockies or equipment?

If Secretariat and Monarchos ran on the same day, how far ahead would Secretariat be witha 2/5 of a second lead?

How's that for getting off the subject? Ringo Starr eat your heart out.

Hi Don

I'd have to take Secretariat by 2 lengths in that one! I put that trivia info in just to horse around! haha!

Thanks for your nice words regarding my 1875-CC $5 COW post.

Drummer,

Very informative article. I especially liked your update with the recent McCloskey claim about V 1A.

It's too bad that the implied conservative grading that goes along with an old green PCGS holder cannot somehow continue to be honored or, at least mentioned when a person sends one in for a new holder.

It's a great looking coin Michael. I recall thinking so when you posted the collection on the C4OA blog some time ago. I agree that the dusty-antique look is exactly what a person wants in mid grade coins. I have never seen this special age "patina" on an AU or MS example where substantial amounts of luster remain. Can the two co-exist?

I hope you bring more of your collection to the August meeting in Carson City.

Best regards...Belay Off

Hi Belay Off

Thank you for your nice words about my 1875-CC $5 COW posting.

The "dusty antique look" is actually a very desirable look for "CC" gold coins. I recall a few years ago when Rusty had a couple of high grade 1870-CC gold eagles. One had that "dusty" look (my descriptive words) and the other did not. The "dusty" coin took the honors for top coin (and top $$ too).

Rusty has a beauty of an 1871-CC $20 gold piece on the Southgate site right now with that special "dusty" look. It is graded AU-55 by PCGS and if it were in an NGC holder it'd be a 58 for sure! It's a fab coin in all regards. I've heard from some US gold coin experts, "this is what "CC" gold is supposed to look like!" I only wish that I could afford that coin right now (1871-CC $20 "dusty")...I'd snatch it up in a hurry! It's by far the best "CC" gold $20 on the Southgate site right now (my humble opinion.)

I believe that the "dusty" look means that a lot of the original skin of the coin remains. This is what makes this look so desired.

Regarding John McCloskey and him finding the error regarding the 1875-CC $5 Var. 1-A; he certainly was right on that one. "Good eye John!"

Again, thank you for your comments regarding my COW.

Question for you: Isn't there a special variety coin; "the Decline Doubled Chin?":silly:
