C4OA Meeting at Boston ANA was created by Loosechange
Well the time arrived for our clubs meeting at the ANA show in Boston at 0100pm Thursday August 12th. Rusty Goe opened the meeting with a big welcome and a short of the new dvd by our own member Dan McCarty. The DVD is awesome.
Dan McCarty was next and spoke about the Hal Dunn Literary Award for articles written in our own Curry's Chronicle that we as members had the chance to vote on. Congratulations go out to our own Rusty Goe as the first recipient of the Hal Dunn Literary Award. Well deserved i must say. If we only had the camera on Rusty when he was named the awards winner as he was totally shocked. Great job as Dan said for Marie to keep this such a secret from Rusty. Again a big hand goes out to our founder Mr. Rusty Goe!! Congratulations!!!!
Featured speakers were Weimar White, Darrell Low and Bill Bugert.
Weimar spoke about the different ways to build a 10 piece Carson City type set. Weimar also pointed out the cost of a matched graded set using F-12 for a cost of $5345 vs.MS60 at a cost of $42950. The Battle Born collection was also talked about and that set has an average grade of MS-63 WOW!!! Weimar was asked where he finds his special Carson City coins and he pointed out that auctions were a good place to look but most importantly to be satisfied with the grade of the coin you buy.
Our next speaker was Darrell Low of New York City. Darrell spoke about Collecting CC Liberty Seated Coins for every Budget.
He posed the question. What can be purchased for the price of an 1883-CC or 1884-CC? Actually you can find some real nice small denominations of CC coins with scarce mintage's for the price of a CC common Morgan dollar. Darrell also spoke about Ways to Collect Denomination, Type,Date and Die Varieties. He talked about grading and we even had a chance to grade the coins on the slides that Darrel had for his presentation. Denominations were broken down and we were shown that you can get scarce dated coins for $500 and under.
Our last speaker was Liberty Seated coin specialist Bill Bugert.Bill spoke about Carson City die marriages and die varieties highlighted in his new book A Register of Liberty Seated Half Dollar Varieties Vol.II Carson City Branch Mint. I highly recommend anyone that loves Carson City coins to purchase this book as it is chock full of information.
Bill walked us through each half dollar denomination breaking each date down by Approximate pieces known, quantity of die marriages, size of mint mark and in what grades coins were most common in.
A question was asked about mintage figures and why there were discrepencies in published records ie; the Redbook and our own Currys' Chronicle. AT the back of the room was Coin Worlds editor and current Farran Zerbe Award winner Beth Deisher and she said the they were doing research to find out why there are such discrepencies in mintage figures. I am sure we will be informed on this at a later date. I want to thank all that could attend and I learned quite a lot on our favorite coins.

The meeting was such a great experience. I just wish I was able to get out to Carson City for the meeting out there, but economics will not allow for it this year. Hope everyone enjoyed the recap.

I got home about midnight last night (Saturday), so I'm still pretty much in recovery mode. Mark has covered the meeting in Boston. I'll just add a few thoughts with more to come in the next "Curry's Chronicle."
It really was a great get together. I did an attendance count, but, with so much going on, I'll be darned if I can remember how many were there. Rusty has the attendance sheet and he can give an actual count. As usual at these types of meetings, you walk away with information overload. Weimar, Darrell, and Bill gave us fantastic information on CC coins. Books were on sale by the authors and, needless to say, gobbled up by many attending, including myself.
Being a Bust Half collector, I attended a Numismatic Theater presentation on the screwpress used by the Mint from the late 1790's and early 1800's. It was incredible. These ANA Shows are just loaded with information and, I highly recommend making it to them every chance you get.
I won't be able to make it to Carson City this year for the same economic reasons that Mark alluded to earlier. Wish I could though.
Hope to here all about the Carson City C4OA meeting in a couple of weeks.

Loosechange,
Thanks a million for the nice recap. I would have loved to be there but other obligations could not be side-stepped.
I share your sentiment and thrill to see Rusty Goe as the winner of the first Hal Dunn literary award... absolutely perfect!
