Just got my copy yesterday and jumped right to that article. Very interesting to read the background behind the auction. What wonderful opportunities people had at that time to acquire a piece of history. Great job on the article, Rusty. Congratulations!
Now, this article begs the question of "Where are they now?" I'm kind of curious as to where all of these Eliasberg CC gold coins are today. I'm guessing a good number of them are in the hands of our own club members. Should we start a survey?
I'll kick it off. I was fortunate enough to have an opportunity last year to acquire one of these. Wasn't quite planning on it, and it certainly wasn't in the budget at the time, but it felt like a once in a lifetime opportunity. I was able to purchase the 1881-CC Half Eagle, and it's now one of the cornerstone coins in my CC collection. It was listed in the auction as an XF, but some of the wear magically disappeared and it now resides in an NGC holder as an AU-53. NGC was a bit generous on this one. But, the grade doesn't matter to me. What matters is that I have a piece of that history in my collection.
Now, who else has the others?
