1870-CC $20 AU-50 PCGS was created by LITAS
The 1870-CC Double Eagle is one of the true classics of the series.
It is calculated that 35-50 coins still exist from 3,780 minted. However there are just 7 coins graded in AU (4 PCGS and 3 NGC).
3 pieces in AU-53 and only one in AU-55. None higher than AU-55.
Finest Smithsonian Institution specimen: EF-40.
Nearly all 1870-CC Double Eagles are owned by serious collectors and are seldom offered for sale. I was surprized to see one for direct sale (not an auction) at Gold Rarities Gallery for $355,000. It was graded AU-50 by PCGS.
Yes, I do need this coin to complete my collection of Carson City $20
Double Eagles, however first I have to win the lotery and second I am looking for an example with at least a CAC sticker.

Hi Litas
I'm personally amazed to see this rarity - "King of Carson City Gold Coins" 1870-CC $20 (PCGS AU-50) piece go for such a low price of $355,000.00
4 or 5 years ago this coin would've sold for near half a mill!!
In this economy, prices on some of our beloved "CC" rarities are softening a bit. This may not last though...This would be a great time to pick that coin up.
I have looked at the photos of the coin but it's virtually impossible
to do a correct evaluation from just a picture....it does look like a premium example though.
Well...all we need then is to see that old Publisher's Clearing House van pull up outside of our house...watch as the crew gets out with their balloons, camera's, champaigne and what not...and ring our doorbell with the great news! Then that coin would be SOLD!

About ten years ago or so, I was attending a coin show in Turlock California hosted by the Stanislaus County Coin Club (It is usually held in Modesto as it is this weekend), a dealer had a PCGS graded EF 40 1870-CC Double Eagle. I even got to hold it in my hands and examine it fully. Held it in my own hands, I did! At that time he was selling it on consignment, said the asking price was $75,000. He told me the guy would take $70,000. I should have sold everything that wasn't nailed down and bought it. Oh well, that's my 1870-CC Double Eagle story and probably as close to one I'll ever get.

Hi Randy
We all have a couple of stories like that one...what a shame you didn't pick that one up.
I have a similar story....June Long Beach Coin Show...NGC AU-50 1870-CC $20....$170,000! Not as good as your price Randy but this was in 2000. What a deal I missed out on.

It may have been about twelve years ago. Time goes so fast and then the years run together and blend to become a big time chunk. But, yeah, like the fishing stories of the ones that got away, we all have a few of them. Well for now, I guess I'll just keep buying magazine subscriptions from PCH.

There is one dealer in New Hampshire that an 1870-CC for sale. he is actually two towns over for me. I know i could not afford it but I would love the chance to just hold it. I may give him a call. I will keep you all posted if he lets me have the chance.
