Even though there are only three denominations of Gold Carson City minted coins, there are four types of gold coins represented. My "CC" gold coin type set is shown below.
Five Dollars - 1871-CC PCGS AU-53
Ten Dollars - 1870-CC NGC AU-50
Twenty Dollars-Type One, 1866-76 "Twenty D" - 1872-CC NGC AU-55
Twenty Dollars-Type Two, 1877-93 "Twenty Dollars" - 1884-CC NGC AU-58
The first thing one might notice is the difference in color and tone. A person might be surprised to learn that, with the exception of the 1870 CC $10, all three of the other coins were photographed under the exact same lighting conditions and camera set up.
It's a little difficult to tell from these photographs but one of the first things I learned about CC gold is that these coins can be pretty rough and marked up. If a person is used to viewing stunning Carson City minted DMPL Morgan Silver Dollars, they'll need to tone down their expectations of surface condition and stop searching for that glamorous proof-like eye appeal that they have been enjoying with those big silver coins.
I have spent the last few years focusing only on Carson City silver coins but have recently begun to study and understand CC gold in earnest. I would love to see your gold coins and learn from my other C4OA members, so please post your photos and tell me all you can about your Carson City gold coins.
Thanks...Belay Off

Thanks Gary...
Actually, I started out as a "type" coin collector. Even though my focus has been on Carson City coins for the last several years, I still enjoy type collecting.
More to come!!!

Thanks Belay for sharing your beautiful coins. It is also my opinion that a true type set of CC gold coin would include the type 2 and type 3 20 dollar gold.
Thanks,

Unquestionably..you are correct.
I have a question/proposal for you Loosechange. I am one of the C4OA members who are sponsoring the Carson City Coin of the Week. We are having a blast writing the articles but part of the goal is to get other members involved too.
We have the week of December 20 open and I would like to ask if you would like to post a CC Coin of the Week? I will work with you all the way if you need any assistance. Please consider it and let us know.
