Books and Reference Resources

If you are new to the topic of Carson City minted coins, please allow me welcome you to a truly fascinating and historically important branch of numismatics.

Book references include "Mint Mark CC The Story of the United States Mint at Carson City" by Howard Hickson. An interesting book written by a very talented historian also known for his photography and Directorship of the Northestern Nevada Museum in Elko.

"The History of the Comstock Lode" written by Grant H Smith deals with the discovery and development of the great silver and gold strike in the mountains above Carson City.

The gold standard Carson City coin and historical reference is "The Mint On Carson Street" written by Rusty Goe. Mr. Goe is perhaps the world's leading authority on coins minted at Carson City. He is a professional numimatist, historian and accomplished writer. For all us CC fanatics, the Mint On Carson Street is the bible.

I beleive that one cannot acknowledge the need for the Carson City Mint without paying mind to the reason for the purpose for it's existence, that being Virginia City and the Comstock region. You cannot know of one without knowing of the other.
Two fine books capture the essence of the era of those times in Virginia City when the mines brought forth the metal to create the coins of the CC mint.
One is "The Big Bonanza" by Dan DeQuille, the pen name of William Wright. He lived in Virginia City during those times and worked for the Territorial Enterprise for thirty years and published that book in 1876 during the hight of mining activity. He was also good friends with another reporter who worked there for a time, Mark Twain. In fact Twain wrote a preface to the book. It's a good read. I am fortunate to have an 1877 edition of that book.
Another good read is "Comstock Mining and Miners" by Eliot Lord published in 1883. Lord worked with the United States Geological Survey and give a very good detailed account of the activities involved with the times and people who shaped the history of that area. A good read also. Oh yeah, I am also fortunate to have two of the 1883 editions of this book.
Both books are still in print and easily available today. Enjoy.
