Allow me to introduce myself

Howdy folks, my name is Carson Sink and I'm a brand new member that wants to learn about CC coins. I have a few CC Morgans but that's about it. Right now, I don't really know how I want to collect CC coins. I'm partial to gold but that's not carved in stone.

I started collecting coins in 1964. I was in a restaurant in Redding, California waiting on a bus to take me to Klamath Fallls, Oregon. The owner sold coins on the side so I bought a penny board and walked across the street to the local bank and picked up a few rolls of pennies. After placing those pennies in the board, I purchased a few more and I've been hooked ever since.

I was in the military in Klamath Falls and I worked part time in a Shell gas station. I can remember customers coming home from the casinos in Nevada and the first thing they wanted to do was get rid of those bulky dollars. We didn't have any place in the till for those large coins so we kept a bucket under the counter that we threw them in. Every week or so we would haul the bucket to the bank and deposit those silver dollars (gulp!).

Through the years I have assembled sets of Lincolns, Jefferson Nickels, Franklin and Walking Liberty Halves. I recently completed a set of Matte Proof Lincolns.

I'm married to a wonderful wife who supports my expensive habit, two grown daughters and three grandsons and one granddaughter.

Anyway, here I am, green as they come, willing to be molded into a Carson City Coin Collector.

Let me be the first of many to welcome you to C4OA and the Forum. I am just a regular poster here. You will learn alot here that you did not know before and will hear alot more of what you already know. Look thru the sections and you will realize everyone who resides here is a delight to know. Congratulations on your collection already, particularly the matte proof Lincolns. Those are beautiful coins.

Klamath Falls, Oregon brings a lot of memories. From 1968 to 1972 I lived in Seattle and worked for The Pacific Resins Co. We produced resins for the forest products industry. Many weeks were spent in Klamath Falls testing our products at the Weyerhaeuser mills.

You ask how to start collecting Carson City coins.The ussual answer is "buy the book first", read all about it, only then buy the coin. Our Forum lists many reference materials. I like books, but it is more fun to have a coin in your hand and then start the research and investigation.

My approach is as follows, I first buy a low grade coin, one that does not break my budget. Something in Good to AU condition.After that I read all I can find about that coin and if I find that coin interesting then I start looking for an MS type example to buy. In other words, crawl, walk, run approach.

My latest interest is CC 50c coins. Starting example is shown below.

Some collectors advocate, first buying the key coins of the series. It makes sense if money is not a problem.

Every collector has to adjust to his abilities, likes and dislikes. Our Forum will provide you with a lot of information about CC coins, but you will have to decide what approach appeals to you.

Please allow me to add my welcome and congratulations for joining one of the finest coins clubs in America.
You stated that you do not yet know how you are going to go about collecting CC minted coins. I can tell you that you have already taken an important step in the right direction by joining the C4OA and beginning your participation on the web site. Within a few clicks of your mouse lies an incredible source of knowledge specific to Carson City coin mintage. Put your checkbook away for now for a while and simply indulge yourself in this web site and the reading materials referenced here. There are literally hundreds of articles written by C4OA members (numismatic novices and pro's alike) in our award winning publication, Curry's Chronicle. A must suggestion also is to pick up a copy of "The Mint on Carson Street" by Rusty Goe. It's the serious CC collectors bible. If you chase down a few of these ideas it won't take long before you begin developing a path or two of specific interest, from which you can develop your own meaningful strategy for collecting Carson City coins.
If you've already spent some time reading on the web site, you probably know about the C4OA annual meeting in Carson City Nevada on Friday, August 27 at 1 pm. The meeting is one of the highlights of the year with members bringing incredible CC coins and related items of numismatic interest. Both the Fall and Winter 2009 issues of Curry's Chronicle have articles about last year's meeting. I sincerely hope you can make it.
